About the Author
Richard L. Daft, Ph.D., is the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Professor of Management and Principal Senior Lecturer in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in the study of leadership and organization theory. Dr. Daft is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly and Journal of Management Education. He was associate editor-in-chief of Organization Science and associate editor of Administrative Science Quarterly. Dr. Daft has authored or co-authored 13 books, including THE EXECUTIVE AND THE ELEPHANT, ORGANIZATION THEORY AND DESIGN and MANAGEMENT. He also has authored dozens of scholarly articles, papers, and chapters and has published in the Administrative Science Quarterly; Academy of Management Journal; Academy of Management Review; Strategic Management Journal; Journal of Management; Accounting, Organizations and Society; Management Science; MIS Quarterly and Organizational Behavior Teaching Review. Dr. Daft has received several government research grants in organization design, organizational innovation and change, strategy implementation and organizational information processing. I wouldn't normally write book reviews, but I found this book to be very informative without being dull. Had to purchase this book for a Master's course. Was skeptical at first, especially about the price. However, this book is written very well and Daft understands how to keep the reader engaged. Only issue is that the price is a little much, but most college books seem to be that way.
I don't normally write reviews, but I just had to read this book for a MBA course through Liberty University and it was excellent. This was the best book that I have read on business thus far throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Daft is not wordy and the examples are pertinent and do not bog down the reading like other books. I actually learned something new with every chapter and it was easy to follow and understand. Excellent read and highly recommended.
tried to purchase the kindle version since I ride a train. The system would not allow me to open the book unless I purchased 5 more copies of it. I had to return all the books and am hoping the hardback will be manageable on the train.
The text is very informative. Used in graduate level intro to business strategy course, this presented ideas in a well thought out and easy to understand way. Case studies applied theories in relatable ways.
Got this older edition for a class at school and it worked out perfectly. Great condition upon arrival! Would definitely purchase from RentU again!
The book itself is turning out to be quite good. I keep seeing references to current events that are actually CURRENT, which is great and shows the author is still active in today's business world. I'm using this book for an MBA organizational behavior class, and since I signed up for a web class, i though hey why not have everything right there and get a kindle version of the book. I have used Coursesmart for e-texts before and although their formatting sometimes looked like a bad photocopy, it was the actual book layout, with page numbers and headings etc. I'm using Kindle for PC with this one, and the text is very clean but I absolutely hate the lack of page numbers, and even worse, the lack of section headings. 1. I recommend Kindle texts at least implement paragraph numbering in the margins (the location xyz-12.3 is nonsense) and 2. your chapter and section heading should be clearly displayed in the top margin. I'm flipping between bookmarks and I have no idea which chapter I'm looking at, I have to keep jumping to the table of contents to find a specific section, etc. It's a big pain. Coursesmart had a contents outline pane, you could tell exactly where you were instead of searching through 800 bookmarks and highlights.
Word salad with dressing at times, but very informative. Required grad school reading. Not too dense, but sometimes wordy enough to cause pause.
