About the Author
APRIL VOLLMER is a New York artist who studied mokuhanga after receiving her Master of Fine Arts in printmaking at Hunter College. Her work has been shown widely and she teaches regularly at the Lower East Side Printshop. She has participated in many residencies, including the Nagasawa Art Park in Japan; and was on the board of the first and second International Mokuhanga Conferences.

Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop by April Vollmer is a beautiful hardcover book filled with background, history, techniques, instructions, ideas, examples, photos and significance of this art media.This is really a comprehensive book and would include everything to get someone started in this unique art form. If someone is researching Japanese art methods, this would also be a wonderful starting point. The end of the book even has a resource list of where anyone interested can go and see some of these works for themselves.Even if someone isn't into printmaking, the ideas and information can be inspiring for other forms of art as well.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing an honest review. Excellent book. As one who has taken 5 workshops from the author, she has, in this book, captured a tremendous amount of info and history with the addition of good pix. A must have for a moku hanga artist. Buy it!
I've only gone through this once, but I know I'll be back since there is so much in it. The hyperlinks alone have kept me busy most of the last two days.
I am very happy to have this book. I am just beginning a nontraditional wood block printing project and was looking for a good source of basic processes that might be of use as I plan for my work. This was perfect, clear and detailed information about materials and process, and a guide to many additional resources for information and sources for printing materials.

This is a comprehensive look into the craft of Japanese woodcut printing. It's well written, beautifully presented, and sensibly organized. Each section is well illustrated with clear instructional images. It's a "Magical Secrets" for Japanese woodcut, plus great sections on historical and contemporary usages of the craft.
